Coronavirus: outbreak declared at Kitchener school

KITCHENER – Public health officials have declared an outbreak of COVID-19 at the college and vocational school in Kitchener-Waterloo. The outbreak was declared after a second confirmed case was announced at the school on Friday night, the Waterloo Region District School Board said in a press release. The new case involved a staff member in the same cohort as a case reported Wednesday in a student. This student was last in school on September 16.

The identity of the two people will not be shared due to privacy laws.

The WRDSB said no other classrooms or cohorts were dismissed as a result of the outbreak and no further action was needed for the classroom where the outbreak was declared. The school board said it was working closely with public health officials to manage the spread of the disease.

An outbreak is declared in an Ontario school when there are two or more confirmed cases with an epidemiologic link.
