According to a new study from the nonprofit newsroom, The markup, Wireless data prices in Canada are the most expensive in the world out of 28 countries tested.

“In Italy, which has some of the cheapest data plans in the world, checking your Twitter feed will cost you a dime, compared to 15 cents in Canada, which is one of the most expensive places in the world to refresh an app,” explains The Markup.

In a table titled “What You Get for Your Money in Canada,” we rank among the most expensive of the 28 countries tested.

Despite being the most expensive, Canada ranks second with France and Sweden when it comes to the speed required to load a 2.9MB website in 0.9 seconds. South Korea, Norway and Australia are three points for first place at 0.6 seconds.

“In Canada, despite the recent introduction of unlimited plans, the overwhelming majority of plans still have data limits. Because Canada has such a large landmass, new companies are struggling to establish reliable national networks, ”says The Markup.

“As a result, only three national networks exist and may charge additional fees for this coverage. However, some costs vary by region. Residents of Saskatchewan, for example, have access to the cheapest plans from SaskTel because the network provider only offers service in that province, ”the website adds.
