After Ohio Governor Mike DeWine granted his state’s two NFL teams permission to open their stadiums to a limited number of fans, about 6,000 people attended Thursday’s Browns-Bengals game. evening in Cleveland.
The governor’s order limited capacity to 1,500 people on either side of the stadium and the Browns have taken further steps in hopes of reducing the risk of coronavirus transmission inside the venue. All ticket booths are digital, with fans assigned to a specific entrance gate and a suggested arrival time. The plexiglass has been installed on the concession stands and all sales will be cashless. They took care of everything down to the last detail, like the single-serve condiments. (It’s all featured in a video on the team’s YouTube channel.)One thing they overlooked, however, is that football fans like to get drunk and do stupid things. At one point during Thursday night’s game, a fight broke out in the stands. All the safety measures in the world don’t matter if fans don’t do their part to protect each other. For most people, that means doing simple things like keeping your distance from others while standing in line for safety or concessions. Browns COO Mike Jenkins told reporters earlier this week that fans were partly responsible for the success of the stadium’s reopening.
“Our fans also have a responsibility and a role to play, and it’s really embracing the requirements of the plan,” Jenkins said. “Wear the mask, social distanced properly and don’t come if you have symptoms. Frankly, if you are not willing or able to comply with these elements of the plan, they should not be present Thursday night. ”
Jenkins didn’t mention the ban on fighting with your neighbors because you have to be a special kind of dumbass to start throwing fists with strangers during a public health emergency.
Opening stadiums to supporters as the pandemic continues to rage was already a risky proposition. Ten people who attended the Chiefs game last week have been asked to self-quarantine after a fan sitting near them tested positive. If everyone at the game was playing by the rules, hopefully the security measures were sufficient to prevent transmission.
Look, every sports fan wants to be back in the stands ASAP, and people will have to look out for each other for that to be possible. If everyone was protecting themselves and others like the guy in the video above protected their beer, we’d be back to normal much sooner.
