THE Great British Bake Off returned to screens tonight with new host Matt Lucas making an instant impact.

The Little Britain star, 46, performed a perfect parody of Boris Johnson at the start of the show – moments after the Prime Minister addressed the nation for real.

He joined co-host Noel Fielding and judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith as he poked fun at government u-turns.

Wearing a blonde wig, Matt told viewers, “If you have to cook in a tent, cook in a tent. But please don’t cook in a tent.

“And we ask people to use common sense when it comes to the distribution of the hundreds and thousands. ”

He stood behind a lectern carrying a crisp version of one of the government’s first coronavirus slogans, reading: ‘Stay vigilant, protect the cake, save the breads’.

Fans were thrilled with the sketch, with one calling it the “perfect opening” of the long-awaited series.

Another wrote: “Opening with a parody of the #covidbriefing which aired just before the 2020 peak. ”

The skit saw ‘Boris’ answering Noel Fielding’s questions, referring to him as “the lady in the funky dress”.

The Bake Off host, 47, asked for the correct way to pronounce ‘scone’.

Matt’s prime minister then turned to his experts, “Professor Paul” and “Prue Whitty” who were standing at desks on either side of him.

Needless to say, they both had different views with Matt, joking, “Well, I hope that clears things up for you.

“All that’s left for me to do is say… welcome to The Great British Bake Off. ”

But that was only the start of the drama, with a cake on the deck in the very first show after Sura slammed into her rival tent Dave.

The new Great British Bake Off series is dirtier than ever with ‘boob cakes’ and Prue Leith declaring ‘I love baked headphones’
