Aston Villa closed the signing of Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley on a one-season loan deal this morning.
Chelsea coach Frank Lampard played 31 times against Barkley in all competitions last season, but following the signings of Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech in midfield this summer, the Blues boss decided to leave Barkley, 26. years old, leaving the club.
Barkley had only appeared on the bench twice in the Premier League this season, was excluded from the Blues’ squad of the day for the 3-3 draw at West Brom last Saturday, and now joins Dean Smith and John Terry at Villa Park for the remainder of the 2020-21 season.

Barkley’s only start so far this season for Chelsea has come in the win over Barnsley last week
Villa manager Dean Smith said: “Capturing a player of Ross’ quality is a real coup for our club and I’m sure he will thrive here and improve our team. ”
Barkley was also not in the Chelsea squad which lost to Tottenham on penalties on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup fourth round, with an imminent transfer to the Midlands.
He fell behind Jorginho, Mateo Kovaic, N’Golo Kante and Mason Mount in the pecking order of midfielder at Stamford Bridge.
England midfielder Barkley, who has been selected 33 times by his country, has made 52 appearances for Chelsea in the Premier League and the Champions League, since his £ 15million transfer to Stamford Bridge in January 2018.

Barkley broke into Everton’s first team when he was 17 after graduating from their youth academy and he went on to score 27 midfield goals in 179 appearances for the Toffees.
The 26-year-old has 33 caps for his country, having made his England debut under Roy Hodgson in 2013.
The ex-Everton man joins a Villa side which have won their first two Premier League games this season, after wins against Sheffield United and Aston Villa.
