Mikel Arteta has explained why he didn’t throw William Saliba deep inside Arsenal.

Saliba was warned about big things in the Emirates and impressed during his stay in St Etienne.

Arsenal fans were forced to wait another year to see him play in English football after signing him as he was immediately loaned to the Ligue 1 squad and they were left on hold longer away with Arteta deciding not to choose him for their Premier League opener against Fulham. and West Ham.

Saliba was an unused replacement for Community Shield’s win over Liverpool but was not included in any of the Premier League sides, however, he could be in line to make his debut against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.

And Arteta admitted that he plans to relieve Saliba slowly as he adjusts to his new surroundings – something he says will take time despite the Frenchman being “really important” for the future. ‘Arsenal.

“I think William is doing very well,” Arteta said of the 19-year-old before the Leicester clash.

“He adapts to the country, adapts to our club.

“We have to keep in mind that he had a very difficult season last year with the number of injuries he suffered.

“But he’s a player who is going to be really important in our future, things take a long time sometimes and we have to respect that. “

Arteta is adamant that Saliba and his new center-back Gabriel Magalhaes will learn a lot by teaming up with experienced Arsenal defender David Luiz.

“I think he’s a really good role model for them, who David is as a person and as a player,” added Arteta.

“With everything he’s achieved in the game, I think they’re lucky to have him around.
