Anarchic jurisdiction: New Yorkers laugh at DOJ’s new label

The Justice Department called the three cities “lawless” jurisdictions Monday on orders from President Trump to block federal funding in “lawless areas.”

It didn’t take long at all before some people in New York City laughed at this claim on social media. Anarchist jurisdiction started trending on Twitter and users began to tell the world what they thought of the label.

Many have reported how much they love their “anarchist jurisdiction” and their favorite things about it. Others simply displayed what was outside their windows to show how unruly their neighborhood can be.

Some have taken a smarter approach and changed the lyrics of one of Taylor Swift’s songs “Welcome to New York” and replaced the city name at the frontline of the chorus with an anarchist jurisdiction.

Governor Cuomo responds

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo called on the DOJ to call it an attempt to distort government agencies into playing politics at a press conference. He compared the move to similar steps taken a few years ago when the federal government threatened to cut funding for sanctuary cities.

The governor said if the federal government threatened to freeze funding again, the state would legally challenge it, and Cuomo predicts the president will lose.

The labels of anarchy come after Trump issued a memorandum earlier this month that highlighted New York, Portland and Seattle as cities where their “local and state governments have contributed to violence and destruction.” after the death of George Floyd on May 25 at the hands of four Minneapolis police officers and refused “to accept offers of assistance from the federal police.”

The list of jurisdictions will be updated periodically in consultation with the Secretary of Homeland Security and the Director of the Bureau of Management and Budget.
