Up to 130 classes have also been disrupted and the minister said authorities are investigating around 250 Covid-19 incidents in schools every day.

These incidents are mainly linked to “factors outside the school, involving people who may have been infected” during the summer, he said.

If a school reports more than three cases of coronavirus, the school is temporarily closed, Blanquer said.

But he said the first week of class went “relatively well”, adding that “despite the fears everyone came back and that makes me very happy”.

As more than 12 million students returned to school in France on Tuesday, some parents and teachers’ unions expressed concerns about plans to reopen classrooms as the spread of the virus accelerated.

The Department of Health said Thursday it had recorded more than 7,000 new coronavirus infections in 24 hours for the second time in two days, just under a record of 7,578 set on March 31.

Hospitalizations for the virus are also on the rise in France.
