But Darren was preparing to visit him the next morning when he received a devastating call at 11 a.m. on April 16.
“I thought it was going to be something to do with his diet. I walked in and they said “unfortunately he’s passed away,” Darren told the Daily Mail.
The family were told the death was due to SUDEP – the sudden and unexpected death of a person with epilepsy.
Darren, who lives in Hessle, near Hull, East Yorkshire, said: “All I learned was that a nurse came back to him and he didn’t respond.
He added: “We desperately need answers. ”
Ollie died at the Royal Hull Infirmary, but the family said the exact cause of death had not been disclosed to them.
The teenager’s death was unrelated to the coronavirus.
Darren hopes to learn more about Ollie’s death and an investigation will be held – although a date has not yet been set.
Oliver had appeared on the BBC’s DIY SOS show with his adoptive father Darren, who suffered from degenerative spine disease in 2017, leaving him unable to walk.
Ollie appeared on the home improvement show in April 2019.
His funeral took place on May 12 and was limited to 10 people.
Mirror Online has contacted the University of Hull teaching hospitals for comment.
