Georgia and Florida recently set single-day death records from Covid-19. Florida state officials have ordered the state to reopen in-person schools in the fall despite an upsurge in cases statewide. Although some of the state’s largest school districts have received state permission to virtually begin school, large school districts like Orange County in Orlando, Fla., Are still being forced to reopen the school. in-person school after two weeks of virtual learning.

The Orange County Teachers Association has declared a deadlock in negotiations with the district over plans to reopen and is suing the district to keep virtual learning in place.

“Based on the numbers in Florida, it’s just not safe to open,” said Gail Weston McDonald, a college teacher outside of Orlando. She suffers from severe asthma and was able to receive a doctor’s note to be allowed to work from home. “Unfortunately, the students who will be forced to go to school will be students from low-income families, putting their lives at risk.”
