US Department of Justice seeks information on deaths in Covid-19 nursing homes

Officials said on Wednesday that the civil rights division of the Justice Department is assessing whether to open investigations under a federal law that protects the rights of people in state-run retirement homes and in other establishments.Prosecutors are trying to determine whether state orders requiring the admission of Covid-19 patients to nursing homes could have resulted in deaths.

Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband says the federal government must ensure that vulnerable nursing home patients “are properly cared for with dignity and respect and are not unnecessarily endangered.”
