news worldBritain will impose a 14-day quarantine on all arrivals from France, the Netherlands, Malta and three other countries, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said, citing rising rates of infection with the COVID-19. The UK government, wary of a second wave of coronavirus, has removed countries from its list of safe travel in recent weeks based on infection data. “Data shows we need to remove France, the Netherlands, Monaco, Malta, Turks and Caicos and Aruba from our list of #coronavirus travel corridors to keep infection rates LOW,” Shapps said on Twitter. “If you arrive in the UK after 04:00 Saturday from these destinations you will need to self-isolate for 14 days. The re-imposition of quarantine conditions is hitting Britons’ favorite holiday destinations in the middle of summer and dealing another blow to a desperate travel industry. Earlier, Prime Minister Boris Johnson had said his government would be ruthless when it came to imposing further restrictions on arrivals amid the danger of importing new cases of the virus. For British holidaymakers, France is the second most visited country behind Spain, a top destination, which has already been taken off the safe travel list. Britain typically receives around 3.5 million French visitors each year according to the same data, making France the second largest market for tourists coming to the UK behind the US.
