US President Donald Trump was abruptly escorted by a US Secret Service agent from the White House briefing room as he began a coronavirus briefing on Monday afternoon. He returned a few minutes later, claiming that there had been a “shootout” outside the White House which was “under control”.“There was a shooting and someone was taken to the hospital,” Trump said. The president said the shots were fired by law enforcement, saying he believed the individual who was shot was armed.
“It was the suspect who was shot,” Trump said.
Trump said he was escorted to the Oval Office by the officer. The White House has been placed on lockdown following the incident.
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought were also taken out of the room and the doors locked.
Trump praised the work of Secret Service personnel for their work to protect him and resumed his scheduled briefing.
