According to The Telegraph, Barca want to test whether Bernardo can be drawn to the glamor of playing in their famous blue and purple, although their budget prohibits them from offering money on their own.
The newspaper cites sources at the club who admit they want to sign the 25-year-old and are more than happy to wipe one of their existing players from the payroll in the process.
Barcelona have already struck a swap deal this summer, replacing Arthur Melo with Juventus’ Miralem Pjanic, as they struggle to cope with the financial impact of the coronavirus.
Bernardo was Man City’s Player of the Year in 2019, but has dropped the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium, playing less than half of their Premier League games since the restart.
He appears to have fallen out of favor with England Under-21 star Phil Foden, while former BBC African Footballer of the Year Riyad Mahrez has continued to impress at City.
Asked about Bernardo’s lack of involvement, manager Pep Guardiola said he was unsure whether to blame himself or whether the competition in the squad turned out to be too great.
Guardiola said at a press conference: “Maybe this season it was my fault or maybe Phil was more involved and Riyadh maintained his level and the other players played well too. ”
Bernardo could still meet Barcelona as a Man City player if the two sides meet in the Champions League semi-finals next week.
The Blues are eagerly awaiting their eighth game against Lyon on Saturday, the day after Barcelona’s meeting against Bayern Munich.
