Ontario Premier Doug Ford slammed U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday after Trump said America would impose tariffs on Canadian aluminum.“I had a good conversation with the Deputy Prime Minister this morning about this and I just have to say how disappointed I am with President Trump at the moment,” Ford said.

“We are their number one trading partner in the world.”

Ford said that in the midst of a pandemic everyone must come together and called Trump’s actions “totally unacceptable” and added that we are now in a “battle”.

“I’ve heard that they are also going to impose tariffs on our steel industry,” Ford added.

On Thursday, Trump announced that America would impose a 10 percent tariff “on imports of unalloyed crude aluminum from Canada.”

“Canada was taking advantage of us, as usual,” Trump said. “I signed it… because the aluminum industry was being decimated by Canada… very unfair to our jobs and our great aluminum workers.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said Canada will impose countermeasures, including retaliatory “dollar for dollar” tariffs.

Ford, meanwhile, encouraged Ontarians to buy products made in Ontario. He has been sending this message for several weeks and amplified it Friday after Trump’s announcement.

“We need to start convincing our manufacturers – the packaging specialists – to put on the ‘Ontario Made’ logo,” said Ford.

“Go out there and buy things made in Ontario. We are facing a real battle right now. It’s us against them. I love the American people, but right now for the President to come and attack us in this time of pandemic when we need everyone’s support is totally unacceptable. We may be small, but we are a consumer giant. “

Ford said Ontario alone makes $ 390 billion a year in trade with the United States

“We are meant to be part of the big family and [Trump] come and stab us like that? Unacceptable, ”he said.

“I’m a businessman and I would never go after my number one client and slap him in the face like President Trump did to the Canadian public and Ontario. We will come back swinging like they have never seen it before.
