Tiger Woods missed fairways but not opportunities to open the PGA Championship

Tiger Woods hadn’t opened a major league with a round in the ’60s since 2014, when he started the Open with a 69 at Royal Liverpool. On Thursday in the first round of the PGA Championship, it didn’t look like this was the day he broke the streak.During one stretch, he missed five consecutive fairways. And the rough of the TPC Harding Park is thick enough to cause problems. Still, there was Woods, finding ways to scavenge pars and squeeze in a few birdies. A round that could easily have been 74 or 75 turned into 2 under 68. So instead of being a non-factor, Woods is in the mix after his first round.

His day started on the 10th hole. Here’s how it all happened:

No. 10: By 5, 562 Yards

Tiger Woods opens with birdie… but it was an adventure. Drive misses the fairway on the left. Try to drill 3 woods, lack of path, well to the right. Then he returns a 10-foot wedge and puts the putt. Hey, it doesn’t have to be pretty if it all adds up to a 4 over a par 5.

No. 11: By 3, 200 Yards

While the No.10, Tiger Woods’ first hole of the day, was a thrill ride, he made his way to a par ho-hum on the 11th. 20-foot tee shot, two putts, par 3.

Pars are good, especially when you see playing partners Rory McIlroy and world No.1 Justin Thomas hack in the rough and make bogeys in the 12th. But Tiger Woods wasted a nice birdie opportunity after a perfect drive and perfect approach with a not-so-perfect birdie putt.

Sometimes things balance out in golf. Tiger Woods missed an inside 10-foot birdie in the 12th, then rolled a 33-footer in the 13th. Yeah, golf can be funny like that. Or maddening. You decide. But through four holes, Woods seems confident in his body and his game.

No. 14: Par 4, 470 Yards

You don’t see this too often. Tiger Woods started walking past his 6 foot to save par. This means he knows he has succeeded. Except no. He mumbled to get off the green. First hiccup of the day and first shot fell in the 14th.

But: Bogey

No. 15: Par 4, 401 Yards

Tiger Woods’ second shot into the 15th green at 115 yards with a wedge in his hand was – there’s no other way to say it, it was horrible – leaving him with a bird putt from a kilometer long. He navigates the par two putts to avoid a bogey that would have really annoyed him.

No. 16: By 4, 336 Yards

The 16th is not an intimidating hole. In fact, it’s the shortest par 4 on the interior side of TPC Harding Park. Still, a poorly rated tee shot and excruciating play from the bunker forced Tiger to go into scramble mode. He saved normal, but it was more work than it should have.

No. 17: Par 3, 171 Yards

A par 3 without drama in the 17th for Tiger Woods. He needed it after a few interesting moments the last holes.

No. 18: By 4, 480 Yards

Tiger Woods steals one to his last hole on his first side. A drive to the left left him with a buried lie, one so bad he had no chance of reaching the green just 140 yards away. A gouge and a flea left him 40 feet for normal. And he rolled it to 1 under 35 on his first nine holes of this PGA Championship.

No. 1: By 4, 393 Yards

Tiger Woods continues to miss the fairways, but he’s largely avoided it costing him any shots. He missed again at No. 1, his 10th hole of the day, but navigated another par despite the error on the tee. He has 1 penny, even if he doesn’t feel or look like him.

No. 2: By 4, 466 Yards

Remember that Tiger Woods gets out of harm’s way and doesn’t cost himself any blows? OK, scratch that. After another tee shot that missed on the left, he ends up with bogey. He’s been asking for trouble all day and comes back tied.

No. 3: By 3, 185 Yards

A small easy par 3 in the third for Tiger Woods. He tried to keep life simple in the short holes. It was the tee shots with the driver or the 3 wood in his hands that caused the problems.

No. 4: By 5, 607 Yards

What an odd, weird round for Tiger Woods. He misses his fifth fairway in a row, this time on the 4th par 5 hole. Must muster his ball as far as possible down the fairway. He has 160 yards left for his third shot … and throws him at 4 feet for a birdie. Somehow, although he is initially lost, he is again in the grip.

But: Birdie

No. 5: By 4, 436 Yards

Hey, Tiger Woods hit a fairway! After spending nearly two hours digging the ball out of the rough, he finds the grass short in fifth and rolls in his second straight birdie to go 2 under.

No. 6: By 4, 472 Yards

A single par for Tiger Woods in the sixth. Always nice when you can type it with one hand and move on. One last chance for birdie in the 7th before two monstrous holes to close his round.

No. 7: By 4, 340 Yards

Early in his career, Tiger Woods always found a way to take such a hitting ball and turn it into 60 something. This takes place in the first round of the PGA Championship. He hits the iron from the seventh tee, hits his approach at 15, then rolls into another birdie. He has 3 cents, two headers, which is impressive since he has missed so many fairways.

No. 8: By 3,251 Yards

A loose tee shot on the brutally long par 3 found the bunker. Tiger Woods couldn’t escape trouble this time around, not getting up for his second bogey of the day. With a hole left on his turn, he’s heading for the ninth at 2 cents.

But: Bogey

No. 9: By 4, 515 Yards

Tiger is safely sailing his final hole with an easy par to post a solid 2 under 68. This is the first time since the Open at Royal Liverpool in 2014 that he has posted a first round in the 60s at a major.
