Gibbs works closely with Agents Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama), Ellie Bishop (Emily Wickersham) and Timothy McGee (Sean Murray). He is known to be a no-frills leader who doesn’t rest until the job is done. While Gibbs has a harsh exterior, recent episodes have hinted at a softer side that is slowly starting to come out.

Season 18 will likely give audiences a glimpse of that other side of him. During the Season 17 finale, Gibbs seems out of place when he confides in McGee and recounts some of his experiences after serving in Kuwait.

Gibbs is more than the boss of ‘NCIS’

NCIS is not just about solving crimes. There is a deeper theme behind the series, according to executive producer Mark Horowitz. Yes NCIS isn’t about catching bad guys, so what is it really about? Horowitz told CBS the show is really about a bunch of kids trying to impress their father. In this case, the “children” are the NCIS agents (McGee, Torres and Bishop) and “daddy” is Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

“I always say this show is really about kids trying to please daddy,” Horowitz said in a special CBS interview. “That’s what the show is about. It’s not about investigating something. It’s really about, there is dad, there are the kids, they want to make him proud, and they will do whatever they can to please him.

He asks Quinn (Jennifer Esposito) to help him hire a new agent, but he pretty much rejects anything she suggests.

Towards the end of the episode, she finally realizes what Gibbs is looking for. Quinn tells Bishop that Gibbs is very careful about who he chooses for his team. “Gibbs is very special,” Quinn says. “He chooses his team carefully. It doesn’t just take an agent for face value. There must be something else, something more that he sees in this person. Quinn says Gibbs always makes the right choice.

Towards the end of the episode, Quinn tells Gibbs that she finally understands what he’s looking for in an agent. He’s looking for someone who needs the team. “Once I figured out what you were looking for, I got it,” she says. “This time it wasn’t about finding an agent your team needed.
