Major spoilers ahead for the second season of Umbrella Academy.
Umbrella Academy loves to let us guess, doesn’t she? The first season ended with our seven overpowered brothers and sisters who walked through time just before Earth was destroyed in the apocalypse. In season two, we learn that the time jump left the Hargreeves family scattered throughout the early 1960s in Dallas, Texas, where they caused a lot of drama, saved the world from a whole different apocalypse, and also organizes a dance party. break, as is tradition. Just when you think they’ve solved all of their issues and made it home to 2019, where they set the timeline in order to prevent the apocalypse from happening, in the season finale they learn. that their late father, Reginald Hargreeves, is now alive and, as he informs them, is not their father – in fact, the Umbrella Academy does not exist at all.
Instead, Reggie created the Sparrow Academy, one of its members includes former brother Ben, who is certainly not dead now, and everything Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Five and Vanya have. fact to the timeline clearly had massive ramifications. And as if that massive cliffhanger weren’t enough to drive us nuts while we waited for news of a season three renewal, there are a host of other questions. Umbrella Academy lets us think. Let’s discuss a few of the most urgent.
The Umbrella Academy was never created! Reginald and Ben are both alive! The Sparrow Academy is one thing! If possible, Reginald from this timeline appears to be an even bigger dick than before, and he informs our team that he’s been waiting for them to return since that eventful (and hilarious) dinner party in 1963 in which they tried to explain how ‘he had adopted them. in 1989 and raised them as the Umbrella Academy and he was not at all satisfied. He seems to take a perverse joy in breaking up their world and introducing them to Sparrow Academy, which at the moment consists of five as-yet-disclosed people, a floating cube, and undead Ben.
Since an alternate version of Ben is a member of Sparrow Academy, does that mean other alt versions of our original UA are also members of this new superhero crew? Or is Sparrow Academy made up of a completely different mix of some of the 43 children born October 1, 1989? Is an alt-Lila (more on her later) part of the group? Can alternate versions of our Hargreeves siblings even exist, or are the six people we know and love just going to be immersed in lives they don’t recognize? (Five encountered a different version of himself, but it was a past version, you know?) What are the time travel rules here? Does everyone have a headache? Time travel is confusing and wonderful, isn’t it? So! A lot! Questions!
Obviously with the Umbrella Academy not existing as we know it’s a massive change in the timeline, but there could be other changes as well. For a heartbreaking example, if Allison hasn’t lived the same life as before, it’s safe to assume that her daughter Claire doesn’t exist. Or, what about the direct changes the Hargreeves might have made being in the 1960s: what the life of Allison’s husband Ray is like now that he knows the future and travels in the time? Will Dave heed Klaus’ warning of how he dies in Vietnam and eventually survives? Oh, and let’s not forget what Vanya ends up inadvertently changing and quitting in 1963, which leads directly to the next question …
When Harlan, the young farmer Vanya takes care of in Dallas while trying to recover his memories and falling in love with his mother, drowns, Vanya saves his life and somehow transmits powers to him. Vanya and Harlan become psychically connected and Harlan can create large and powerful force fields. Before the Hargreeves return to their time, Vanya is able to drain his power out of him, and it looks like Harlan has returned to normal. The last time we see him, however, he’s in the back seat of his mom’s car as they head to California to start over, and he’s levitating a toy. So the child definitely still has powers. What he will do with them or how they will affect his life and the world in general remains a mystery.
During the first season, we received little information about Reginald’s origin. We saw him say a meaningful farewell to a dying woman before leaving her planet and arriving on Earth in the 1800s. In Season 2, we get a few more details about what he was doing in the 1960s: primarily, working with a powerful shadow government called the Majestic 12, and giving them its sophisticated technological capabilities in return for protecting its “interests in obscurity.” side of the moon. Whatever that means. And then, when the Majestic 12 pisses him off, he kills them all (!) After taking off his human skin costume (!!) and revealing himself to be some sort of reptile alien creature (!!!). Comic book fans were no doubt waiting for this moment. Yet Reginald remains more mysterious than anything else. What are his plans for the Earth and the Moon? What was happening with his home planet? Is her skin suitable for itching? We hope all questions will be answered at a later date.
Perhaps the best question is “When is Lila?” since we last saw her she grabbed a briefcase from the Commission and traveled back in time to 1963. You can’t really fault her for wanting to take a little getaway after the day she has. eue, however: Lila learns that the manager, whom she is believed to be her loving foster mom, actually had her parents killed (by five!) so she could steal Lila and use her powers to her advantage because, oh yes, Lila is another of the 43 children born on October 1, 1989 The Hargreeves siblings welcome Lila – whose power is that she can mirror the powers of anyone else, and that’s very cool – in the fold, but all of this information and the Handler’s deep betrayal is too much for her and she is time traveling elsewhere. If there is a season three, we hope to find it, but if I was looking for someone who just found out that their parents were murdered in cold blood and that their whole life was a lie, I would probably go back to it first. . event to see if she’ll try to prevent it from happening in the first place. I say it like that!
It could get boring if every season of Umbrella Academy has some sort of apocalyptic event that needs to be stopped, and based on what Sparrow Academy reveals, there are more pressing issues that need to be addressed first, but it has been repeatedly pointed out that there are always an apocalypse and it’s always caused by Vanya. Let us all be vigilant. And maybe make sure Vanya doesn’t get angry anymore.
Say yes I beg you. These guys are going Freak when he reappears in 2019.
The Commission undergoes a massive turnover at the end of season two: The Handler tricks Five into assassinating the Council; she kills AJ, the head of the whole operation, by swallowing his whole little fish body; then each field agent is killed after the Handler called them to the farm in 1963 to eliminate the Umbrella Academy only to be wiped out by Vanya. At the end of the finale, we learn that the dear, sweet Herb has been put in charge of the timeline defense organization, and we’re all so proud. Especially his best friend, Diego. But will Herb usher in a less murderous version of the Commission, or will the corporate line of ‘what’s going on’ regarding the preservation of the timeline remain in place ( including the apocalypse)? Most importantly: Is Herb and Dot a thing? Because I send it very hard.
GOOD. It’s not technically a lingering question, but I just want to know that I’m not alone in all of these feelings, you know?
