Egyptian and French foreign ministers on Sunday discussed regional crises, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as the latest developments in war-torn Libya and blast-ravaged Lebanon, Egypt’s ministry said. Foreign Affairs in a press release.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian stressed the need to preserve the principle of the two-state solution to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the statement said.

They also agreed to continue to support efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive and just settlement of the decades-long conflict, in accordance with international legitimacy, “to ensure peace, stability and security throughout the region”.

Regarding the Libyan crisis, the two ministers welcomed the recent ceasefire announced separately by Prime Minister Fayez al-Serraj, head of the UN-backed government of national unity (GNA), and Aguila Saleh, spokesperson for the House of Representatives which supports the self-proclaimed Libyan National Army (ANL) led by Khalifa Haftar.

Serraj and Saleh announced the ceasefire in separate statements on Friday, pledging to end all hostilities in Libya and calling for presidential and legislative elections and the resumption of oil exports.

The Egyptian and French foreign ministers considered the decision “an important step” on the road to a political settlement in Libya.

Shoukry and Le Drian also discussed how to support Lebanon after the massive explosions that rocked the capital Beirut earlier this month, killing at least 177 and injuring around 6,000.
