The new French Minister of Culture, Roselyne Bachelot, has temporarily suspended France 4 from the public channel France Télévisions.

France 4 and the France Ô channel were to be closed on Sunday as part of a long-standing cost-cutting measure for the broadcaster.

However, the Minister of Culture, who took office last month, has postponed the closure of France 4 until next summer, while France Ô will now be closed on August 23.

France 4 is regularly used by the broadcaster to broadcast sports content. These events have included matches of the European Rugby Challenge Cup, the FIS World Ski Championships and selected matches of the French Open tennis tournament. The final of the European Rugby Challenge Cup 2019 between the French teams from Clermont and La Rochelle attracted an average audience of 1.07 million viewers on France 4, with an audience share of 4.7%.

The channel is the main outlet for France Télévisions’ educational and youth programs. He aired prerecorded daily school lesson shows during the Covid-19 lockdown and it was this contribution that led to his stay.

The eventual closure of France 4 will allow France Televisions to save 40 million euros (46.7 million dollars) per year.

France Ô presents content from overseas departments and communities in mainland France.
