Ruffin is working with Meyers (also an EP in the new talk show) on his own late night show and he points out that there is an advantage to having different voices on his show that are not like his own. “That’s why Amber thrived on the show,” he said, adding that she was filling that space that no one was filling.
Just because Ruffin has a new talk show doesn’t mean his duties at Late night with Seth Meyers are done. In fact, the two shows will be so close to each other that she doesn’t really have to juggle much and she’ll always be on the spot. “This first series of shows will be the preamble to launching the show with an audience because Amber is so good with an audience,” Meyers said.
The late night space is predominantly white and masculine. Ruffin joins the ranks of late night shows hosted by women. She doesn’t know why the timing for a late night lady is better, but she knows her show is going to be fantastic. “He’s here if they want him,” Ruffin said with a smile. “I should say whatever takes you want, we’ll get them.” She added that people are increasingly interested in the different perspectives of women and blacks. “Now people’s understandings have broadened and their interests have changed. Hope this translates into a late night TV.
Emmy and WGA Award nominee Amber Ruffin is a writer and performer for NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers and was the first black woman to write for a late night talk show in the U.S. She wrote and performed on Comedy Central’s Detroiters and is a regular narrator on cable Drunk story. Additionally, she was a writer / performer for the 2018 and 2019 Golden Globe Awards and wrote for the series. A Black Lady sketch show.
Ruffin, Hagel, Meyers and Mike Shoemaker are the executive producers. The series is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, and Sethmaker Shoemeyers Productions.
