Some of the area’s savviest diners have come up with a new list of absolute must-try dishes

Now in its 12th year, the Chinese Restaurant Awards spotlight the incredible range and high quality of delicious food served in the Metro Vancouver area. The awards are split into two groups: The Diners ‘Choice portion invites the restaurant audience in Metro Vancouver to say where they like to eat, and the Critics’ Choice features choices from some of the world’s most respected personalities. city food.

2020 has been a difficult and unusual year for restaurants in Metro Vancouver, with Chinese restaurants hit hard at the start of the new year due to news of the spread of COVID-19 in China. Then COVID-19 hit British Columbia, leading to restaurant closures and restrictions, forcing some to close their doors temporarily or permanently, as well as many to focus on take-out options.

Still, the Chinese Restaurant Awards were able to release Diners’ Choice’s top picks for 2020 earlier this summer, and now reveal the dozen dishes you’ll want to put on your critically-picked must-see list.

“This year’s judging process was interesting, to say the least. As always, the judges ate a lot, as anonymously as possible, to find the best new dishes and ideas. Chinese cuisine is incredibly diverse – both in a multitude of regions and levels of sophistication. But the impact of COVID – and the struggles of restaurants, their staff, and customers – have also highlighted the core ideals of Chinese and Taiwanese cuisines: immediacy, locality, and simplicity. These quiet gestures of support and community are more important than ever. So we present to you our list of dishes that have truly resonated with both our palates and our hearts, the stories of owners, young and old, who strive every day to connect with us. We are, as always, grateful for their generosity, ”said Lee Man, president of the jury.

And what a lineup for this year’s critics’ picks. Ten of the dozen selected are newcomers to the list of winners – very exciting for these restaurants and dinners. The winners “encompass a wide variety of regional specialties such as Cantonese, Hong Kong, Northern China, Shanghai, Taiwanese and Xinjiang,” according to the Chinese Restaurant Awards.

Highlights include items that showcase BC’s glorious abundance of fresh seafood, as well as simple, traditional fare like festive moon cakes. There are dumplings galore, as well as a heartwarming bowl of savory Taiwanese beef noodle soup (one of our Vancouver Torafuku favorites that debuted on their lunch menu last fall and remains a new staple food).

The Chinese Restaurant Awards have also included a pair of honorable mentions this year, although sadly they both come from places that are not here now as we previously knew them; The Opera Patisserie closed its store in Richmond after a decade (their Salted Duck Egg Yolk Croissant gets the nod), but promises not to be completely bankrupt, while Blossom Dim Sum & Grill appears be closed permanently (their Pork Bun pineapple barbecue was called out on the list).
