Tesla is now more valuable than the 492 lowest companies in the S&P 500, without being a member of the S&P 500 index.
At its intraday high of $ 2021.99 on Thursday, Tesla posted a valuation of over $ 378 billion, just above Walmart’s market cap of $ 368 billion, according to data from YCharts.com.
The electric vehicle maker has jumped more than 45% since announcing on Aug.11 that it would implement a 5-to-1 stock split at the end of August.
Since the start of the year, Tesla has jumped 378%. Investors continued to uplift the company after recording its fourth consecutive quarter of profitability last month and are now eligible to be part of the S&P 500 Index.
Tesla’s relative valuation to Walmart is astounding when you consider the financial profiles of the two companies. In its most recent fiscal year, Walmart posted $ 500 billion more in revenue than Tesla.

But in a world where interest rates are close to zero, growth is scarce and investors are willing to pay for it. For example, Tesla was showing a price-earnings multiple of 1030x on Thursday.
