Like many video gamers, I was – how should I phrase this? – “very damn excited” to see a Spider-Man: Miles Morales 2018 star game and sorta-sequel Spider Man The PS4 title would arrive on PlayStation 5, with the return of the Insomniac Games creative team and a first look at drugs to boot. Was I a little disappointed to hear that this would sound more like a standalone spin-off than a full adventure game? Reader, I was. But now that members of the Insomniac and Marvel teams have told EW a few more details about the upcoming game, I’m back and good to go.
In the original version Spider Man, Miles Morales was not only a playable secondary character, but in a post-credits stinger, revealed to have been bitten by a radioactive spider in Norman Osborn’s lab and obtained bloody spider powers himself! As the incident prompting Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse reminded us, Peter Parker isn’t the only fucking Spider-Man in town! At one point, this post-credits reveal was just meant to be a fun Easter egg, nothing more. But Bryan Intihar, Insomniac’s creative director, insisted that this sow the seeds of a potential sequel: “We knew early on that [Spider-Man] was going to end with the spider bite. We teased him during development. I think everyone was focused on, “Can you do the first one really well and we’ll take care of the other stuff later?” But we wanted this to be in place, so if it became a reality [to do another game] we could make it… One of the reasons we posted this was, hopefully, to convince people that he’s a Spider-Man now. Can we have a match with him? “
The answer is, indeed, yes! And the “game with him” will take place a year after the events of the first Spider Man. Miles, who lives in Harlem, has to contend with warring factions between a crime syndicate using cutting edge weapons and technology and a huge energy company – and my friend, I am very in Miles Morales to a “David vs. Goliath” story that grows in the character that addresses the horrors of technology, capitalism and overindustrialization!
As for the controversy over the “shortened scope”, the fact that it is not a “complete sequel”, comparisons with Uncharted: Legacy Lost? Intihar promises that the game “is a full arc for Miles Morales that started in Spider-Man. We’re really finishing the maturity of this hero in our game. It’s a complete story… When we started to create it, we realized that with a little more of a compact storytelling style, we could tell a very moving that would suit really well an experience that would take Spider-Man 1 and [Miles Morales] and do justice to this character. Intihar also mentioned how every facet of the game, from its shorter scope to its animation styles, is character-oriented specifically towards Miles Morales, calling him “his own Spider-Man” and stating that his arc, compared to Peter Parker, ”was born more of the family. What I really think is compelling about Miles as a character is that he has friends that he could actually let into his world – his human world and his Spider world. He’s a little different in the way he approaches it.
For my part, I can’t wait to see how Miles approaches it when the game hits PS5 at the end of this year. For more PS5 goodies, here’s a load of memes.
