The phase 3, or human, trial of the Covid-19 vaccine produced by Chinese company Sinovac Biotech Ltd will soon take place in Bangladesh, Health Minister Zahid Maleque said.
He made the announcement during an online press briefing after a discussion with senior Chinese Embassy officials at his office on Thursday afternoon.
“We have decided that doctors, nurses and health workers will have priority for vaccine trials,” the minister said. “The Chinese company will bear the cost of the vaccine and the testing process. “
Chinese citizens working in Bangladesh will also participate in the vaccine trial, he added.
“As far as I know, we won’t be able to get vaccinated until December or January. Already 140 companies and organizations are working on manufacturing the Covid-19 vaccine, ”Zahid said.
“I hope that we will get the Covid-19 vaccine from the WHO (World Health Organization) by June 2021. We have already asked the WHO to obtain the vaccine as a priority,” he said. he adds.
Other officials from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare were also present at the meeting.
Sinovac is one of the pioneering companies in a global race to develop a vaccine against the coronavirus.
“We have given approval for the human trial of the Covid-19 vaccine after reviewing all the necessary research protocols,” the minister told BSS.
On July 19, the Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC) extended ethical approval for the Phase 3 trial of the Covid-19 vaccine by Sinovac Biotech Ltd.
Sources said the BMRC decided to approve the final stage of the Chinese vaccine trial as the International Diarrheal Disease Research Center based in Dhaka, Bangladesh (icddr, b) submitted a protocol to research, seeking approval to conduct the study.
