Sergio Perez returns to Racing Point at Spanish GP after negative COVID-19 test

Sergio Perez will return to his Racing Point seat for this weekend’s Spanish GP after testing negative for the coronavirus.

The Mexican driver had contracted COVID-19 and was excluded from the two Silverstone races after repeated positive tests, with Nico Hulkenberg in his place.

But his last test before this weekend’s Barcelona race returned a negative result and Perez was duly cleared to return to the paddock and drive this weekend.

Speaking before the news was confirmed, Perez had said: “I am very lucky that I only had mild symptoms so I was able to continue training and make sure I am ready to resume. the car’s steering wheel.

“I’m very happy to have my tablet for entertainment as well! I definitely missed the race and it was hard to watch from the outside. I can’t wait to get on the track, I hope this weekend. ”

The 30-year-old looks back on an RP20 car which is again likely to be competitive on a fast circuit at Circuit de Catalunya. Substitute Hulkenberg qualified third at Silverstone last week, finishing seventh in the race just behind teammate Lance Stroll.

Perez has finished in the top seven of the three races he’s competed in this season.

What now for Hulkenberg?

The German’s brief return to the team for which he had already competed 78 races is therefore over, even if his solid performances as a “super-sub” have put him back on the radar with other teams for 2021. .

Hulkenberg, who left the grid at the end of last season when Renault released him, said discussions with team managers had already taken place ahead of his call.

“There are conversations that have been going on for quite some time now, not just now because of it,” he told Sky F1. “Obviously it’s kind of a process, you keep in touch with the team leaders, you talk about possible opportunities and what might change.

“It’s still going on, obviously behind the scenes. I think it’s still going to take a while to get an answer there, but it’s OK for me. “
