How long will it take for your second stimulus check to arrive? We establish some possible dates between when the invoice is passed and when your money could actually arrive. James Martin / CNET

The IRS could still send a second stimulus check for Eligible Americans by the end of the year, but the decision to spend another economic recovery planrests in the hands of Congress. Although discussions on a new bailout bill start to look uncertain, it remains to be hoped that the two sides could find common ground and pass a full bill or stand-alone legislation that includes a new round of payments. direct. Both sides of the aisle have publicly expressed a desire to resume negotiations.

“We have said over and over again that we are prepared to come and meet them in the middle – that would be $ 2.2 trillion,” House of Commons Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Thursday after a call with the chief of staff of the White House Mark Meadows, who failed to move the needle.

Your check, direct deposit or EIP plan could come sooner rather than later with a second round of payments, according to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who said the IRS could start issuing checks within a week of negotiators reaching a deal. In contrast, it took two and a half weeks for the IRS to start sending the first round of stimulus payments after the adoption of the CARES law in March.

This Mnuchin timeline can help us sketch out a potential timeline for a second stimulus payment – we’ll explain more below. This story is updated regularly.

How soon can the IRS issue a second follow-up check?

Any hope of resuming negotiations slips in September, perhaps after Congress returns to work after an August hiatus. The Senate is adjourned until after Labor Day, September 7.

Here are some possible dates that another stimulus bill could pass and the IRS could send out the first checks. For reference, we also include the timeline of the now expired Loi CARES. Payments aren’t released to everyone at the same time, so we’ll figure out which groups of people might receive their payout first.

Which group would get a second stimulation test first?

It is likely that the IRS will use roughly the same calculations and tools to send the second stimulus check as the first, including the IRS Get My Payment tool for monitoring your stimulation test payment and registration at direct deposit.

First group: IRS sent first batch of stimulus checks to people who had filed 2018 or 2019 income tax returns and had already provided the IRS with their direct deposit information, according to House Ways and Means Committee . Under this model, the next stimulus payment could first affect people who have already signed up for direct deposit, either as part of their 2019 tax return or before.

Second group: The next group was made up of Social Security beneficiaries who had information on direct deposit with federal agencies. (According to the IRS, about 80 million people received their checks by direct deposit in the first week they were disbursed.)

Third group: Paper checks didn’t start mailing until a week later, to people who hadn’t signed up for direct deposit, but you could still sign up for wire transfer on May 13.

Fourth group: The first one Economic impact payment debit cards, which are prepaid, started rolling out in mid-May for around 4 million people.

Fifth group: Anyone who received their checks after June or is still waiting to receive their stimulus payment. The IRS told CNET that direct payments will continue until the end of 2020 for some people who were not in the previous groups. Here is what could be delaying the delivery of the stimulus check for some and how to contact the IRS to report a missing, lost or stolen check.

Why your second stimulation check might come later than someone else’s

We won’t know for sure until a new bill is passed and the IRS forms a plan to send checks, but here are some things to consider.

Changes to assistance for dependents: It depends on the version of the bill adopted. The CARES Act allocated $ 500 to dependents aged 16 and under. The Republicans-backed HEALS Act also allocates $ 500 to dependents of all ages. But the Democrats-backed Heroes Act suggests $ 1,200 for up to three dependents. If a change is made, even if it ultimately leads to sending more money, it could force the IRS to adjust its accounting system. This can potentially slow things down for you.

Banking status: With the first checks, people who did not submit direct deposit information to the IRS had to wait longer to receive the stimulus money in the mail. As of June, 120 million people had received the stimulus money by direct deposit, 35 million had received a check in the mail, and 4 million had received a prepaid debit card. The IRS did not provide an update on the number of people who received a stimulus check before August 1.

Banking status has affected the speed of payments since the passage of the CARES Act, disproportionately impacting black Americans and other people of color, according to an analysis by think-tank Urban Institute. People who were white and had incomes above the poverty line were more likely to have received their first stimulus check by the end of May than people who were black, Hispanic or below the poverty line, according to the analysis.

According to a report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, people who did not earn enough money to be required to file federal income tax returns in 2018 or 2019 would not get a stimulus check unless they submitted a form to the IRS. This group includes low-income families with children and a much larger number of blacks and people of color.

When is the last date you might receive another stimulus check?

Again, the timing of the first stimulus checks may provide an indication, but there is no official news until another relief program is finalized.

The IRS will have sent out about 200 million checks by the time the agency finishes distributing the first set of payments. (The total population of the United States is over 330 million people, according to the Census Bureau.)

The majority of these were sent in early June, although the IRS said it would continue to send payments until the end of the year.
