Slowly but surely the gang is coming back together. A fifth Scream movie is in the works and we already know David Arquette has signed on to return, while Neve Campbel has previously admitted that she is in negotiations to return as Sidney Prescott. Another piece of the puzzle is now in place.
Courteney Cox, who played journalist and author Gale Weathers in the previous four films, confirmed that she was returning for Scream 5. In a post on Instagram, she revealed an image of the Ghostface mask from the film, writing: “I can’t wait to see that face again. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news.
The upcoming Scream movie will be the first unrealized by horror icon Wes Craven, who died in 2015. Instead, it will be directed by Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the duo behind Ready or Not of 2019. A screenplay is being written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, who succeed Kevin Williamson (Scream, Scream 2 and Scream 4), who will be the executive producer of the project.
No other details are known about the upcoming Scream 5 at this point. However, a former cast member made it clear that he wouldn’t mind being asked to return for the film – even if that would be next to impossible. In a recent interview, Matthew Lillard – who played Stu in the first film – said he would love to reprise his role once again. Of course, those who saw the original Scream will remember that Stu was not only one of the killers in the movie, but he was very dead by the end. But hey, anything is possible. Jamie Kennedy’s Randy died in the second film, but appeared via videotape in Scream 3.
A release date for Scream 5 has not been set.
