RuPaul’s Drag Race’s Chi Chi DeVayne dies after bout with pneumonia

Chi Chi DeVayne, a former RuPaul’s Drag Race student, died Thursday at the age of 34 after being hospitalized with pneumonia in his hometown of Shreveport.

It happened a month after the Louisiana native (born Zavion Davenport) was released from hospital after a biopsy for kidney failure and suspected high blood pressure.

In February, DeVayne revealed to Hey Qween that he had been diagnosed with scleroderma, a chronic, incurable disease that causes the skin to tighten and thick scar tissue to form around internal organs, affecting their ability to function.

The University of the South alumnus finished fourth in the eighth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2016 and eighth place in the third season 3 RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars in 2018.

Before becoming famous, Chi Chi paid the bills by working at a car wash and a grocery store while performing flashbacks and lip-syncing shows at Central Station, according to the Shreveport Times.

In January, DeVayne felt “blessed” and “grateful” to play Jo-Jo in a fabulous theatrical production of Women Behind Bars at Montalbán in Hollywood.
