Robert Trump, the younger brother of the president, has passed away, the White House has confirmed.
“He wasn’t just my brother, he was my best friend,” Donald Trump said in a statement on Saturday.
The president visited his brother in New York hospital on Friday afternoon, telling reporters: “He’s going through a difficult time.”
The US media had said Robert Trump was gravely ill, but it is not known what he was suffering from.
” It’s with [a] with a heavy heart I share the fact that my wonderful brother, Robert, passed away peacefully this evening, ”said the president. His memory will live on in my heart forever. ”
President Trump’s son Eric also paid tribute.
“Robert Trump was an amazing man – strong, kind and loyal at heart,” he wrote on Twitter. “He will be sadly missed by all of our family. “

Robert Trump was the youngest of Trump’s five siblings, born two years after Donald.
He has spent much of his career in the family-owned real estate company, becoming a senior executive. Unlike his brother, however, he is said to not court publicity and lives half-retired in New York State.
He recently went to court in an unsuccessful attempt to stop the publication of his niece Mary Trump’s revealing book on the president, How My Family Made the World’s Most Dangerous Man.

According to the New York Post, Robert spent more than a week in the intensive care unit at Manhattan’s Mount Sinai Hospital in June.
