Stuf Law describes the story of the anime:
Year 70 of the cosmic era. The coordinators, a group of genetically improved humans, have settled in colonies orbiting Earth. But that did not ease the tensions between them and ordinary humans; the conflict quickly escalates into full-scale war. In the neutral colony of Heliopolis, Kira Yamato and her friends go to school and are just children. But when ZAFT Commando forces attack, Kira’s life changes forever.
Having no choice, he and Federation officer Murrue Ramius are thrown into battle in a prototype mobile weapon, which Kira calls “GUNDAM.” Now Kira must stand up for herself and her friends from her own people. Because, unknown to anyone, Kira is the coordinator. And the enemy he faces on the battlefield is his childhood best friend, Athrun!
