Rhode Island Sends Mickey Mouse Signed Tax Refund Checks

Over 150 people in Rhode Island have accidentally received tax refund checks signed by none other than Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney, rather than their officials.According to CNN, the improperly printed signatures were on 176 tax refund checks. The error was the result of a technical problem in the printing system of the State Taxation Division. State news station WPRI reported that Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney are the names used on the dummy checks for internal testing. Jade Borgeson, chief of staff for the Rhode Island Department of Revenue, told CNN that the test image files were mistakenly used on real checks.

Rhode Island State Treasurer Seth Magaziner and State Comptroller Peter Keenan should have been the signatures on the checks. In a photo posted by NBC 10 WJAR online, Mickey Mouse’s name was imprinted where Magaziner should have been, and Disney took Keenan’s place.

The 176 tax refund checks were primarily corporate tax refunds and were mailed to taxpayers on Monday. The poorly printed checks were primarily related to business taxes, such as sales tax, business refunds, and tax credit refunds. After being mailed in error, checks have been canceled and can no longer be deposited.

Replacement checks bearing the appropriate signatures will be mailed to affected taxpayers within one week.

“The division continues to proactively contact affected taxpayers to remedy the error and apologizes for any inconvenience the error may have caused,” Borgeson told CNN. The Rhode Island Taxation Division said anyone who received one of the incorrect checks should contact the Department of Revenue.
