The printing error was the result of a technical glitch in the Tax Division’s automated refund check printing system, according to Jade Borgeson, chief of staff at the State Revenue Department.Mickey and Walt’s invalid signature lines were accidentally pulled from the Tax Division’s test print files, Borgeson said. The names of State Treasurer Seth Magaziner and State Comptroller Peter Keenan should have been on the checks.
The checks were mailed to taxpayers on Monday and were for various business taxes, including sales tax, refunds of tax credits and corporations. A majority of them were corporate tax refunds, Borgeson said.
The checks have since been voided and cannot be deposited. Corrected checks will be reissued to the taxpayers concerned within one week.
“The division continues to proactively contact affected taxpayers to remedy the error and apologizes for any inconvenience the error may have caused,” Borgeson said.
Taxpayers who have received a poorly printed check should contact the Ministry of Revenue.
