Rhea Ripley recently spoke with Newsweek’s Phillip Martinez to promote tonight’s WWE NXT episode, where she will face Dakota Kai in a No. 1 match to determine the “Takeover: XXX” opponent for NXT Female champion Io Shirai.Ripley dropped the NXT Women’s title to Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania 36 in early April, and Flair then lost it to Shirai in a triple threat, with Ripley, during “Takeover: In Your House” in early June. Ripley said she felt like the spotlight on her had diminished, but she understands the big picture.

” I feel like [the spotlight on me] diminished a bit, but we all have to share the limelight, “said Ripley.” I’ve had time to shine and it will come back, but for now, Io is the NXT Women’s champion and I go back to be in the spotlight again. Whether it comes or not, we’ll see. I have to try other things and face other people too. I’ve had my time and everyone is going to have their time and I’m just happy to be here and to struggle and to kick. ”

Ripley recently competed with The Robert Stone Brand, which includes Stone and Aliyah, and the new acquisition Mercedes Martinez. It is believed that a Ripley feud with Martinez will begin soon, now that Stone has asked Martinez to remove Shotzi Blackheart for him. Ripley and Martinez already faced off in Australia early in Ripley’s career, and she hopes they can revisit that rivalry in NXT soon.

“I would love to step into the ring with Mercedes. I entered the ring with her in Australia when I was 17, ”said Ripley. “To be able to step into a WWE ring with her would be amazing. She taught me so much back then and she could teach me so much these days as well. She has so much knowledge, she’s been in this game for so long time and it’s amazing that she’s a part of WWE. And I hope one day I can step in the ring with her and if my feud continues with the Robert Stone brand, I hope to throw it in the trash again. ”

While Ripley is still open to a run on RAW or SmackDown, she said that doesn’t mean she’s ready to leave NXT. She said she would stay on the black and yellow mark if she did it her way.

“I don’t think I will ever be able to overtake NXT. There’s always something coming and I honestly want to be in NXT for a long time, ”Ripley said. Whether that’s the case or not, I don’t know, I don’t have that call. I feel like I have so much more to do here. Whether it’s singles matches or whatever, I like NXT and I love to be a part of it. And I hope I’m here longer. I guess we’ll see. ”
