Pressure was mounting on President Aoun last night after documents showed he and the Lebanese prime minister were warned of the dangers of a shipment of ammonium nitrate detained at the port of Beirut two weeks before it exploded.

Mr. Aoun remained in office, despite the resignation on Monday of Hassan Diab, the prime minister, and his cabinet following the explosion, which killed at least 160 people.

He said the presidency was not responsible for the management of the port and that he had ordered security agencies to “do whatever is necessary” on the shipment.

However, protesters were saying that Mr. Diab’s resignation still left the biggest oligarchs in Lebanese society in place.
