Prepare for wave of evictions as rent runs out, warns Ontario NDP

TORONTO – As rent checks expire, some are warning Ontarians should prepare for a wave of evictions now that protections put in place earlier in the COVID-19 pandemic have been lifted.

Opposition New Democrats say that with the provincial state of emergency over, evictions can start again today.

The NDP also says the new law passed, Bill 184, makes it easier for landlords to evict tenants who are behind on a repayment plan.

The ruling Progressive Conservatives have said the bill will help tenants, not harm them.

A spokeswoman for the Prime Minister said the bill “reinforces on landlords the need to explore repayment agreements and maintain rents – rather than resorting to evictions.”

Ivana Yelich says eviction orders are mostly pending before the pandemic begins.
