The pilots showed their skills in tough conditions at Manchester Airport as Storm Ellen beat the city. Strong winds of around 40 mph made their job more difficult this afternoon.

Images taken from Ringway show an Emirates plane expected to land sideways.

It also showed several planes swaying from side to side when the gusts took effect.

Pilots from RyanAir, Scandanavian Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, Easyjet and Jet 2 were among those featured in footage captured by the Aviation Up Close YouTube channel.

A yellow wind warning was in effect, with the Met Office saying it looked like fall rather than summer for many today.

The wind alert has now passed, but it is expected to rain tomorrow in many places in Greater Manchester.

It comes as Manchester Airport announced earlier that it will temporarily close Terminal 2 again.

The terminal was closed in March due to a “significant drop” in passenger numbers amid the coronavirus pandemic, but then reopened in July.
