Phil Jones made eight appearances for Manchester United last season

Twitter has apologized to Manchester United defender Phil Jones for making fun of him on his official UK account.

The social media network says “being the target of online abuse is not easy to manage” on a help center page dedicated to handling and reporting abuse.

Yet on Tuesday he engaged in such behavior by targeting the center-back, with his @TwitterUK account verified: “Name a better footballer than Phil Jones. ”

United reportedly complained to Twitter about the post subsequently deleted, with the social network apologizing to the club and the player.

England international Jones had a tough season and missed the Europa League final squad with an ankle injury.

He last played for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in January’s FA Cup fourth round victory at Tranmere, scoring the fourth goal in a 6-0 victory.
