Olivia Wilde leading Sony Marvel movie

Sony Pictures has struck a deal with actress-turned-filmmaker Olivia Wilde (“Booksmart”) to direct and develop a “secret Marvel movie project revolving around a female character in Sony’s own Marvel Universe – better known as by Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC)).

Although not confirmed, Deadline who broke the report says they expect the story to be Spider-Woman-centric. It’s unclear which direction Wilde will take as the superhero character has been the alter ego of several characters in the Spider-Man timeline over the years.

Wilde and his writing partner Katie Silberman will write the project with Amy Pascal producing. The trio are working on a Universal Christmas Buddy movie that they hope to make before this one. Wilde will direct his next film, the psychological thriller “Don’t Worry Darling,” this fall.

This project marks the second SPUMC film to be based on a female character. The other is the film “Madame Webb” that SJ Clarkson was called upon to direct. Sony was developing Black Cat and Silver Sable films at one point as well with “The Old Guard” bar Gina Prince-Bythewood attached.

Wilde joins a growing roster of female directors tackling big-budget comic book adaptations following the massive success of Patty Jenkins as the helm of “Wonder Woman” and its sequel and Anna Boden co-directing ” Captain Marvel ”. Others include Cathy Yan on “Birds of Prey”, Chloe Zhao on “Eternals” and Nia DaCosta on the “Captain Marvel” sequel.
