The ranking of the top four teams from each conference was decided by round robin competition, as their opponents qualified from the top five of the five qualifiers.
Teams that were eliminated in the qualifying round include the Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Edmonton Oilers, Nashville Predators, Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets and the Toronto Maple Leafs. They were among 24 teams included in the altered NHL playoff format amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
As of August 3, the NHL has not reported any positive COVID-19 tests among players and staff since the teams entered the two centers of the “bubble” league on July 26. The Eastern Conference teams played at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto and the Western Conference teams competed at Rogers Place in Edmonton.
The Stanley Cup final, which is currently scheduled to end no later than October 4, and the conference finals are set to take place in Edmonton after the end of the league’s second round.
