Netflix confirms Big Mouth cast replacement after backlash

Netflix has confirmed comedian Ayo Edebiri will join animated hit Big mouth in a redesign.

Big mouthThe company’s creators publicly apologized earlier this year for choosing white actress Jenny Slate as Missy’s biracial character and announced that she has voluntarily stepped down from the role.

On Friday August 28, it was announced that comedian Edebiri would take over. Slate will still be voicing Missy for most of season four, with Edebiri stepping in for the penultimate episode and also joining as a writer (via Variety).

“It’s about Missy’s continuing evolution as a person – that she has all of these different parts of who she is,” Big mouth explained co-creator Nick Kroll. “There’s the Missy touch and the more sexually adventurous Missy, the Missy mirror, and then also this Missy that she discovered hanging out with her cousins and taking a look at her black identity. “

Edebiri also noted, “The transition is a nice farewell to Jenny at this point too, in a way. [It’s an homage] while bringing something new. The voice I found is also due to the work Jenny did. ”

When Slate left the show in June, she publicly apologized for playing a biracial character, acknowledging that she had “made mistakes” in her acting career.

“I can’t change the past, but I can take responsibility for my choices,” she wrote on Instagram. “I will continue to engage in meaningful anti-racism action, be attentive to messages in my work, be curious and open to comments, and do my best to take responsibility for how I am part of the problem.
