U.S. Representative David Price, a Democrat from North Carolina, calls on Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to resign after the latter appeared at the Republican National Convention.

“With the secretary unable to rise above election year politics, he must resign immediately and then personally reimburse the Treasury for all expenses related to this trip,” Price said in a statement Tuesday. “The American people deserve a Secretary of State dedicated exclusively to them.”

Pompeo recorded the speech against a backdrop of Jerusalem’s Old City, prompting Price to ask the secretary to reimburse the Treasury Department for the trip out of his own pocket.

“The claim that his RNC speech was delivered at his own pace ignores the fact that US taxpayers paid for his trip and that State Department personnel are accompanying him overseas,” Price said.

POMPEO BREAKS THE DIPLOMATIC TRADITION WITH THE SPEECH OF THE CONVENTION, ALL TRUMP THE FOREIGN POLICY PROGRAM

“The Secretary of State has a solemn duty to work on behalf of the American people and should laser focus on diplomatic efforts to ensure our national security by coordinating with our allies, keeping our adversaries at bay and upholding the American values abroad ”. Price said.

Pompeo had deviated from tradition by showing up at the convention – something the former secretaries of state had not done. The speech sparked controversy and criticism from Democrats amid questions about whether he is breaking the Hatch Law.

Yet he stayed away from partisan snipes, failed to mention the election or Democratic candidate Joe Biden, and instead focused on the actions of the Trump administration on the world stage.
