Morning Report: Dana White Talks Heavyweight Division After UFC 252, Says Francis Ngannou Is ‘Next’

This weekend, Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier will fight one last time to determine not only the heavyweight champion of the world but also the greatest UFC heavyweight of all time. And while this fight is far from certain, what seems to be set in stone is the next heavyweight title fight after this one: Stipe Miocic vs. Francis Ngannou II.

Ahead of UFC 252, Daniel Cormier made it clear that this will be his last professional fight, meaning if “DC” wins the title, he will eventually quit the sport in the lead and drop out of the belt. If that were to happen, UFC president Dana White said Miocic’s job would certainly qualify him to be one of two contenders for the vacant title.

“It probably is. It would be hard to deny Stipe, ”White told The Schmo. “We’re saying this Saturday the greatest heavyweight of all time is the winner of this fight, so to say he’s not good enough for another vacant title fight would be crazy. “

This sounds like good news for Miocic, who is sort of in a lossless situation. If Miocic beat Cormier on Saturday, he would obviously still be the champion and thus continue his reign, and if he lost, he could always come back. And anyway, according to White, Miocic’s opponent for the next title fight will be a familiar foe, Francis Ngannou.

“Francis is next,” White said. “Once again, we’ll see what happens on Saturday and then yes, Francis is the guy.

So all of this should lead to the inevitable conclusion that Miocic-Ngannou II is next in the heavyweight division. Unless, of course, Cormier retires. And while Cormier has been adamant that he would like to come out on top, speaking with ESPN after the UFC 252 press conference, White is just as convinced that this won’t be the last we’ll see from DC.

“No, it’s not (Cormier’s last fight),” White told ESPN. ” No it is not. It will obviously depend on how the fight goes on Saturday night. If Cormier wins in a spectacular fashion, it won’t be his last fight. And knowing him like me, if he loses, then it’ll be, “I can’t go out like this.”

“You know me: when people start talking about retirement, I think they should. Stipe, who people were saying is probably going to retire after that too, but he crushed that tonight, I don’t think either of them should retire. They’re two of the best in the world, and they still have plenty left. We will see. We’ll see how the fight goes on Saturday.
