A love story in the making for more than 8 decades reached its peak last week … Ivan O’Neil and Gerry Souhrada got married in Montana.
The couple, both 91, said ‘I do’ to their immediate family on July 25 in Lakeside … after more than a decade of dating. The nuptials were also streamed live on Facebook for loved ones everywhere to watch.
Ivan and Gerry met in first grade and became friends in high school. They both continued to marry other people, but continued to cross paths over the years at various local events and committee meetings to plan their class reunions.
As fate would have it … they both mourned the loss of their spouse – Marian and Bob – Thirteen years ago, when they met over breakfast.
We are told that Ivan was there with his group of hikers – the “Over the Hill” gang – and he went to say hello to Gerry. Later that day Gerry mentioned to her son… if someone as nice as Ivan asked her out she would say yes.
Sure enough, old gunslinger Ivan did just that later that night… when he asked her to be his date at a banquet because “it wouldn’t be fun to go alone.”
They have been together ever since, love to travel and have been around the world. We’re told that Ivan actually asked Gerry to marry him early in their dating years, but she wasn’t ready after losing Bob. However, when he recently asked the question again… she said yes.
This is all quite interesting, but there is also this – Ivan and Gerry signed a marriage contract! We are told that Ivan wanted it to be short and simple, but he ended up doing 30 pages… much to his dismay.
The couple won’t be going on their honeymoon at this time due to the pandemic, but let’s say when they do… that will include attending a University of Montana football game.
