Mike Green retires, reflects on Capitals, career and future – The Athletic


It’s over for Mike “Game Over” Green, the defenseman who set records and electrified crowds in Washington as the Capitals “Rock the Red” rose. Green told The Athletic, in an exclusive interview with was on the phone from his home in suburban Calgary this week, which he was planning to retire after a 15-year career that also called in Detroit and, briefly, Edmonton.

At 34, Green is healthy and still has some hockey left. But he gained a new perspective on life during the NHL’s COVID-19 shutdown.

“Being an athlete isn’t the only part of who I am,” Green said. “I am husband, father, son, brother, uncle. I have been fortunate enough to make my passion my profession, but at this point in my life I am considering other things that I feel called to do.
