Mets acquire Giants speedster Billy Hamilton

The Mets provide defensive reinforcement. They traded for outfielder Billy Hamilton, acquiring 29-year-old speedster from the Giants for right-hander Jordan Humphreys. Hamilton had yet to play for the Giants this season.

With center-back Jake Marisnick with a hamstring injury, Hamilton offers the Mets a solid center-back to spell Brandon Nimmo.

Hamilton divided 2019 between the Royals and the Braves, stealing 22 goals in 119 total games. From 2013 to 2018 with the Reds, Hamilton stole 277 goals in 690 games, eclipsing 56 interceptions in four consecutive seasons from 2014 to 2017. Since his debut in 2013, Hamilton’s 72 defensive points have ranked second among all center players.

The Mets had previously nominated Humphreys for the assignment.
