Mariah Carey said she felt “extremely uncomfortable” during an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, in which the pop star was pressured to reveal a pregnancy that she later miscarried.
Carey appeared on DeGeneres’ US talk show in 2008, when DeGeneres asked the star to confirm or deny tabloid rumors that she was expecting a baby with then-husband Nick Cannon.
Despite Carey’s protests that she wanted to change the subject, DeGeneres offered Carey a glass of champagne to “toast not to be pregnant.”
When DeGeneres noticed that Carey had faked sipping champagne from her glass, she yelled “You are Pregnant! “
In 2010, Carey revealed that she was indeed pregnant at the time, but miscarried shortly after the interview with DeGeneres.
“I was extremely uncomfortable with that moment, that’s all I can say,” recalls Carey in a new interview with Vulture. “And I really had a hard time dealing with the consequences.”
She continued, “I wasn’t ready to tell anyone because I had a miscarriage. I don’t want to throw someone who has already been thrown under a proverbial bus, but I didn’t enjoy that moment.
Carey went on to say that she wished “empathy” was “implemented” at the time, adding, “But what am I supposed to do? It’s like, “What are you going to do?” “
The independent has contacted the DeGeneres representative for comment.
Carey and DeGeneres’ 2008 clip went viral on social media last month in the middle an internal investigation into the allegations behind-the-scenes workplace sexual misconduct, racism and bullying on the DeGeneres show. DeGeneres herself was not involved in the allegations.
