Manchester United should be clearly among the favorites to sign Gabriel Magalhaes

Qualifying for the Champions League was important for Manchester United. The significance of that may be about to play out in a big way, United have reportedly pursued defender Gabriel Magalhaes.

French newspaper La Voix du Nord (via GFFN) reports that United have made a proposal to sign the Brazilian defender.

United are one of three clubs to have done so, along with Napoli and Everton. The offer would be around £ 27million plus £ 2million in bonuses.

Clear the pioneers

United’s status as a Champions League team allows the Red Devils to seal Gabriel’s signing.

Everton don’t even have European football to offer next season and will rely on the admittedly strong pulling force of manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Napoli can only offer Europa League football, with their last seventh place in Serie A already established with one game to play.

This makes United pioneers in clinching the Brazilian, especially adding the prestige and global recognition already associated with being a Red Devils player.

Competition must be accepted and not feared

One of the reasons Gabriel doesn’t pick United is his own fear of not being an auto starter

In Lille, it took him a bit of time to break through, after unsuccessful teenage loans, but he did. It shows his determination to succeed and he should also support himself to become a star at Old Trafford.

At United, he would have something unique to offer, as the club’s only left-footed center-back once Marcos Rojo is finally moved.

This will help him stand out, while his style of play in passing the ball from behind is a perfect match for what manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking for.

If Gabriel believes in himself, signing for Manchester United is his only real option. Champions League football is expected to seal the deal.

United being used?

Sky Sports report that Gabriel’s representatives are in the UK in talks with United and Everton.

There shouldn’t be anything to choose between the two, given what United can offer.

It’s fair to wonder if United are just being used by Lille and Gabriel to jack up the price. We have seen it several times before.

If the player needs to speak to move to United then that’s a problem. It should be obvious to him.
