Manchester United list three finalists in pursuit of center-back
According to ESPN, Manchester United have drawn up a shortlist of three men in their quest for a center-back for partner skipper Harry Maguire.
The Red Devils were linked with Bournemouth star Nathan Ake. But with the Dutch star agreeing to join Manchester City, we now have to look elsewhere.
United’s defense has done well this season. While the improvement is clear, there is still a long way to go. The likes of Maguire and Victor Lindelof, despite their good results, lack focus at times which could prove costly.
The three players on United’s list include Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly, Aston ace Villa Tyrone Mings and AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli.
Koulibaly is one of the best defenders in the world. However, Napoli is a difficult clientele to deal with, which makes the transaction difficult. Already 29 years old, he is also unlikely to be a long-term option.
Koulibaly is also being sued by City. The Senegalese will make a decision on his future at the end of the season.
Mings was a much more financially viable option. However, it depended on Villa’s relegation. With their survival, a deal may not be so simple anymore.
Romagnoli is a reliable player who could be on the move this summer. With AC Milan missing their Champions League qualification, United could rush for the Italian.
The biggest name on United’s shortlist is Koulibaly, despite being a right-handed player who plays as a left center-back. Solskjaer, meanwhile, is keen to bring in a left-handed player.
If he is ready to abandon his request, Koulibaly has all the qualities of a game-changing signing.
