Manchester United dressing room decides on target for next season

Nemanja Matic insists Manchester United are aiming to fight for the Premier League title next season. United finished third in the recent domestic season to advance to the Champions League after a 14-game unbeaten streak in the league dating back to January.

Although United accumulated the same number of points as last season (66), they climbed three places in the league table to record their second best result since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

United haven’t mounted a credible league challenge since their last win over seven years ago, but Matic says the dressing room’s intention is to try to bring a 21st league title to Old Trafford.

“Personally, I would like to win the Premier League with Manchester United,” Matic told United magazine. “I think our club still have to fight for the title.

“We always have to try to do our best for this club, which we are doing right now, and I think we can’t allow any club to win the league seven or ten games before the end of the season, we have to so we fight until the end of the season. end.

“Of course we have a young team but that can’t be an excuse. I think these young players already have a few seasons behind them. So from next season we have to fight for the title.

“I don’t know if we will win [the league] but I’m sure we can fight to the end. That’s my personal goal and I think the rest of my teammates think the same. ”

United finished 33 points behind the runaway winner Liverpool, but the recent champions have racked up a significant number of points season after season.

Leicester added 40 points to their 2014-15 tally – when they finished 14th – in their miraculous league victory in 2015-16 and Chelsea, 10th in 2015-16, fell from 50 points this season to 93 points in 2016-17.
